Day 234 of Indian places giving smiles– The sweet city of Rajkot

Day 234 of Indian places giving smiles– The sweet city of Rajkot

It was a rare family holiday time. As our hired car got out of the Rajkot airport at 6.30 a.m. I was wondering why our driver was happily driving on the wrong side of the road. And then we noticed that one side of the main road was cordoned off especially for the fitness conscious morning walkers!

We entered the main Kalawar Road and saw both commercial and residential structures on either side- a sign that it was a small town. We stopped at a not so great looking place for one of the greatest breakfast we ever had! The tastiest Powa and Ghatia with some amazing chatneys! And we just had to finish it with piping hot gelebis and it was not even dawn!

We had to start our journey with a prayer at the impressive Swami Narayan Temple. It was the first time we saw the many pillars adorned with images of men atop it! We were in time for the morning pooja and I saw the priest using a different kind of Aarathi which seemed to have a candle like contraption on top! And there was strict segregation of male and female devotees.

Another place we had to visit in Rajkot was the famous ice cream street nicknamed so because of the variety of local ice cream parlours in a row. The people here believe in enjoying the good things in life and food seems to be on top of this list!

As we drove out of Rajkot we were happy to see the excellent condition of the roads in Gujarat. And also a first for me – the sight of happy white blobs of cotton on small green plants on the fields of black soil!
