Day 237 of Indian places giving smiles – transit town of New Jalpaiguri and Siliguri

After the partition of India, a huge part of West Bengal became a foreign country, so New Jalpaiguri & Siliguri, due to their strategic location, became an important access point to go to the North Eastern part of our country.

After a long train journey from Calcutta to New Jalpaiguri by a broad gauge train, we stayed at the retiring rooms. I tried to explain to my small children, that there were other smaller trains that work on metro gauge and narrow gauge at this particular railway junction.

We went to the famous Siliguri market about which I had heard a lot from one of my aunties.  In 1994 the Indian economy had not fully opened up and there was a craze for the reasonably priced unusual so-called foreign made stuff that came from across the many neighbouring countries across the border! I did whatever little bit of shopping that I could here for so called foreign stuff!

My children were not used to the intense cold weather, so I had to carry a bulky glass bottle of waterbury’s compound which suddenly fell off our cycle-pedalled rickshaw and broke on the road…this ride is my most striking memory of our short stay at Siliguri!
