Day 257 of Indian places making you smile – the textile city of Ahmedabad.
As a teenager the memory of my visit to Ahmedabad is about walking through rows and rows of textile stores and excitedly buying dress materials for college wear. Years later, I visited Ahmedabad again on official work to conduct a training program. This time too the excitement was the same. After work, I made sure that we took out time from our hectic schedule to visit the textile market and buy cotton tops, dress materials, sarees, bedsheets and other stuff. And most of them would not accept a credit card, so I had to borrow cash from my Director to fund my immediate shopping at Ahmedabad.
Years ago. my husband had brought home from Ahmedabad a silver replica of the semi circular delicately carved mesh of the Sidi Sayed mosque. My architect son had described eloquently about the fusion architecture in the Husain Doshi Gufa, where he had attended a week long workshop.
My only memory of Ahmedabad city sight-seeing as a teenager was about doing some boating in the Kankharia lake and walking under the Teen Darwaza- an imposing triple arched gateway.
Most of the time in Ahmedabad was spent on work, so I did not have time for sightseeing.
Even last week, we passed through the Ahmedabad bypass road on our long road trip to North India. We stopped off the highway to have a pizza at an all vegetarian place, the first time I saw a continental cuisine –all vegetarian place!
Maybe next I will make a more relaxed trip to see the other sights of this prosperous city.
