Day 324 of small things giving smiles – a taste of a different culture. The holy month of Ramzan has just finished .One thing you must have heard of again and agaun during this time is about the happening iftaar parties. And it surely is a pleasure if you get invited to such an occasion.
So being a pure vegetarian, it was with a lot of apprehension that I went one evening to an iftaar event. This was specially conducted for non-Muslims like us to let us know about the deeper significance of this ritual.
We entered a bit late and were part of an audience listening intently to a good orator. He told us in detail about the five pillars of Islam – oneness of God, prayer, charity, fasting and pilgrimage.
He also told us the significance of fasting during the holy month – to develop self control by abstaining from base desires, to increase oneness to God, to refrain from coveting another’s property, to inculcate the habit of charity, etc.
We also got a chance to enter the women’s prayer room and experience the powerful spiritual stillness of the place.
And finally we got treated to a sumptuous meal – and yes there was enough variety for a vegetarian like me.
We came home that evening, a little heavier physyically, yet a little lighter mentally….the base principles of all religions is the same….it is upto humanity to ignore the different rituals , yet practice the common message of love and peace of every religion!
So which small thing gave you a big smile today?
Please share your experience of small things giving you smiles.
