Day 423 of new travel experiences giving smiles –  recreating the life of a mill girl at Lowell

Have you ever wondered when was the time that women got out of their cozy farm houses and learnt to live on their own in big cities? Well we got a taste of this when we visited Lowell in USA

So on day 57 of our long trip, we went to some old textile mills which witnessed the changes in America from an agriculture based economy to an industry based economy..in early 1700’s ofgicially hired agents went to remote villages of Amèrica to recruit girls to work in the new mills that were just being set up.

These ‘mill girls’ stayed in boarding lodges under a strict warden, worked under harsh factory conditions of heat and noise for 12 to 14 hours a day, ate dinner together, had only 3 hours of free time, and slept in cramped rooms.

The girls still preferred this routine life in the cities where they got were assured of boarding lodging and wages as compared to the uncertainties of village life. Earning your own money does wonders to your attitude about life!

The exhibit of the simple yet elegantly dressed naive village girl, transforming into a confident well dressed urban mill girl brought a smile to my face!
