Day 277 of facts of pride about India giving smiles – Cleanliness in Mumbai Airport in 2013 and now
(This article entitled : Can Mumbai Airport be as clean as Toronto Airport?’ was written on 25th March’13 – the first day of my vision for Clean India by 2-2-22, not knowing then that our new Mumbai Terminal would open one year later to become as perfectly clean as the Toronto airport!)
I am waiting outside the Mumbai Domestic airport to receive my cousin who is based in Toronto. Suddenly I notice a used plastic cup on the side lawn. Previously I would only grumble about how dirty India has become. Now I wonder-Can Mumbai Airport become as perfectly clean as Toronto Airport?
I walk up to an official and ask to meet the highest authority- the airport manager. She is not in her seat. I talk to her, Mrs. Sadaf on her mobile and ask her-Can Mumbai Airport be as perfectly clean as Toronto Airport?
She tells me to speak on phone to the airport landscaping in charge-Mr. Sanjay Mane. He comes over with the housekeeping in charge in Mumbai airport Mr. Mehndi Hasan. I show them the plastic cup and ask – Can Mumbai Airport be as perfectly clean as Toronto Airport?
Mr. Mehndi Hassan is passionate about maintaining cleanliness. He told me that he would check that not only the top surfaces are clean, but also ensure that even the bottom surfaces are dust free. His staff is definitely doing the best they can to keep Mumbai clean.
Instead of complaining, I acknowledged all of them for their contribution in keeping the airport clean. He replied after 40 years of service, this was his moment of bliss (jannat) that we public are at least aware of the huge amount of effort it takes to keep the airport clean. He has 9 staff on continuous duty in the airport premises. By the time they clean one side, the general public has dirtied the other side. Some taxi drivers even spit paan in spite of being warned against it.
He needs more support from the general public, the visitors, the taxi-drivers, etc. who add to the garbage of the airport. I offered to do an attitude change workshop with them.
Then in 2013 none of us had ever seen Toronto Airport. But I will not complain about cleanliness at any India airport. Instead I propose that we Indian citizens do the following…
-We citizens can stop tolerating any kind of garbage in public places.
-We citizens can bring this dirtiness to the attention of the decision making authority.
-We citizens can spread this message of change of attitude towards cleanliness in public places.
Thank You people like Mr. Mehndi Hasan for keeping all our airports clean. We citizens are ready to co-operate with you. Do you accept my proposal dear readers?
I am clear that on 2-2-22, the world will say Wow- Clean India.
(This article was written on 25th March’13 – the first day of my vision for Clean India…. And by 25th March 2014, I walked into the new international terminal for Mumbai, whose cleanliness standards can be comparable to Toronto airport! Yes…I believed in the glory of our Mumbai airport in 2013 and it has actually come true today! )
