Day 252 of Indian places making you smile – the lake at Karnal
We had a long drive on the good roads of the National Highway also famously known as the Grand Trunk road. It was time to stop for an authentic local breakfast and we selected a roadside ‘dhaba’ at Karnal. We relished our thick paratha topped liberally with white coloured home made butter and finished it with the thickest drink of lassi that I could ever think of.
I was pestered to buy locally grown long grained basmati rice. Looking at the well-built Haryavani men around the place I could imagine how rich food is an integral part of living in this side of India. This town is believed to be the place of residence of the mythological character Karna. We were at the historical place of the Karna Lake where he is supposed to have given away his protective armour to Lord Indra.
Later our car had to pass through this ancient city of Kurukshetra which is referred to whenever we speak of a major battle. Our driver told us that it was here that the Mahabharata war between the cousins Kauravas and Pandavas was fought. More importantly it was here that Lord Krishna delivered his famous sermon to Prince Arjuna which became the Gita-the most holy book of the Hindu religion!
